March 18:
We moved on from pottery to bugs.  We have studied the Author, Illustrator Eric Carle and his book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".  An author is the person who writes the book and the illustrator is the person who draws the pictures.  Eric Carle does both!

November 1- Thanksgiving
Students are learning about family traditions by creating the ancient art of pottery.  They have learned about Maria Martinez who was an artist from New Mexico.  She learned how to make pottery from her aunt and has passed down the tradition to  her son.  We began the unit by watching a video and creating our designs on paper pots.

Shortly, they will begin creating clay pottery.  First knee pots and then pinch pots.

Knee pots are made by first making a sphere.

Next, they flattened it into a pancake.

Finally, they shaped it by placing it on their knee.

The pottery will be fired in a  bisque firing first to make it rock hard, then the students will glaze the pieces and I will fire them again to complete the process.

September 31- November 1:
We have studied Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and have learned that Max uses his imagination to create another world along with his own imaginary monsters.  We are being inspired by Mr. Sendak's imagination and putting our collage and pattern skills to work in creating our own "Wild Things".

The first week we created heads, second the bodies and third and maybe fourth weeks we will add details.  They are looking superb!  This is my example:

September 23:
Imaginary monsters are now complete!  Unfortunately for our parents, they are SO awesome and I'm going to put them in the hallway so they will not be coming home yet.  Sorry!  This week I read Even Monsters Need Haircuts by Matthew McElligot.  I've also read The Monster Counting Book by Kate Daubney.

September 16:
We are using our imaginations with the Monster unit.  I read to them I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll and we discussed abstract and realistic art.  We are creating imaginary monsters for the next couple of weeks.  I am loving how they are turning out!  Our first graders have quite the imaginations.
